Major events at Toronto to commemorate the bicentennial of the attack on York in 1813.

Robert Malcomson's Capital in Flames, which is both a detailed account of the battle and a portrait of the frontier town when these events took place, will be available in many Toronto bookstores in its new paperback edition.
April 28 - Return of Overdue Books. As a gesture of good will, representatives from Sacket's Harbor will present new books to the Toronto Reference Library to replace those that were stolen during the Battle of York from the town's small library.
The Fort York War of 1812 Festival, June 15-16. The Fort will be animated by the best of Canada's re-enactors to recreate a picture of the Fort at the time of the war.

On stage, In the Midst of Alarms: The Untold Story of Women and the War of 1812.
Dianne Graves's book In the Midst of Alarms: The Untold Story of Women and the War of 1812 was adapted for the stage at University of Toronto Mississauga this past November 2012.
The third-year class of student actors developed a collective stage adaptation based on Dianne Graves's book. The joint Sheridan-UTM Theatre and Drama Studies Program is a professional actor-training diploma program embedded in a University of Toronto Honours Degree. Productions are mounted in UofT Mississauga's 85-seat Erindale Studio Theatre. Under professional direction, the class of over 20 young men and women created an original 2-hour drama by adapting selected stories and documents from the text into monologues, scenes and narrations, accompanied by projected graphics from the book.

James Elliott’s Strange Fatality wins major provincial award.
Strange Fatality wins J. J. Talman Award
The Ontario Historical Society has announced that James Elliott’s Strange Fatality has won the 2010 J. J. Talman Award for the best book on Ontario’s social, economic, political and cultural history. The judges’ citation reads in part: “Well researched, well written and well illustrated, Strange Fatality brings to life the Battle of Stoney Creek, one of the most decisive reversals of military fortune in the War of 1812 that, in no small measure, determined the fate of the colony that would become the Province of Ontario.” For the full OHS press release, click here.
Strange Fatality wins Hamilton Literary Award
James Elliott’s acclaimed War of 1812 book, Strange Fatality, won the non-fiction book prize in the 17th Annual Hamilton Literary Awards. The award was made November 15, 2010, by Arts Hamilton in a ceremony at Theatre Aquarius. Elliott’s study of the Battle of Stoney Creek has been widely praised on both sides of the border for showing how a largely-forgotten action in June 1813 changed the course of the war and quite likely saved the future province of Ontario. Elliott’s revelations on the neglect of soldiers’ remains on the battlefield were instrumental in convincing municipal politicians to approve a major reinterment project set for 2011.
